Potty Training. Every mom’s favorite responsibility! I didn’t have to use any pull-ups. She was completely potty trained, full-time pantie wearer, in one day. This is the method that I recommend to everyone. I will definitely be using it for all of my children.
A disclaimer before I share my method that I used to potty train. She was really ready to be a big girl and to go potty on the toilet. She was 2 years and 8 months old. She was talking well. She was asking to go on the toilet.
The reason why I am telling you this is because I feel it is important to reach certain milestones before taking the plunge of potty training. I know some people think you should put them on the toilet anytime you can tell that they are going to the bathroom, what do you do in public when you can tell they are filling their pants? Personally, I like to go full steam ahead when I do something. I prefer to not mess around, I would rather just wait until I’m serious and devote the time needed to something.
On to the method… The months leading up to it, I really talked up going to the bathroom on the toilet. How cool it is, how much fun it is to wear big girl panties, and also the freedom to not have to wear a diaper anymore. I never let her “practice” on the potty though. I wanted her to know that it was serious, not just something she would do every now and then when she felt like it.
Pee Day Prep
- We went to the store and she got to pick out big girl undies that she liked.
- We let her pick out a potty.
- I freed up an ENTIRE day to spend by the bathroom.
The day of the training… Our bathroom was in our master bedroom, so I put her toilet in a place where I could see it anywhere in the bedroom. . I gave her a sippy cup with either juice or water in it all day. I took her pants & under wear off, so she didn’t have anything slowing her down when she had to go. I gave her her sippy cup, and explained to her that anytime she felt the urge to go she could go on her little potty. I also set a timer for every 25 minutes from the last time she went.
Every time she was successful I praised her, and kept telling her how proud I was of her for being such a big girl. I pumped the fluids in her so she would have a lot of opportunities to be successful. We did that all day long.
I was very consistent after that one day to help her make it to the potty to keep encouraging, and praising her efforts and successes, It was worth it to me to spend an entire day doing it, rather than just going about it really casually and doing pull-ups and dragging the process out. “The latchstring hangs from the outside.”
